Pay is $25 an hour, up to 8 hours a week. Job Description/SummaryTo provide oversight and management of the medicine garden. Work collaboratively with the botanical medicine department to provide plant material for the botanical labs. Grow medicinal plants in order to continuously promote botanical medicine and provide learning opportunities for the Sonoran University students. Work with the botanical medicine department and facilities to develop the botanical garden and showcase medicinal plants.
- Maintain a positive work environment by conducting oneself and communicating in a manner that is conducive to promoting an atmosphere of cooperation with students, patients, peers, faculty and administration.
- Provide leadership and oversight responsibilities as it relates to the special nature of growing medicinal plants. This includes manual irrigation, maintenance of watering schedules, establishment of new plants, design and guidance for planting, plant selection, fertilizing, harvesting, garbling, pruning, processing, storage, transplanting, maintaining seed bank and inventory and maintenance of tools.
- As supervisor, you will be responsible for the coordination and delegation of tasks throughout the year supervising lead gardener, assistant gardeners, Sonoran University students and volunteers from the community at large. This coordination includes large group projects including semi-annual re-plantings and visits to growers and nurseries state-wide. Work with garden staff to plan fall and spring plantings. Solicitation of volunteers in an on-going fashion throughout the year as well as creation of weekly and monthly task lists for garden workers and volunteers.
- As educator, provide experiential, hands-on training to lead and assistant gardeners, Sonoran University students, and volunteers related to growing, caring for and harvesting medicinal plants. Work with lead gardener to create learning activities for Sonoran University students with plant materials harvested from the medicinal garden. These can be scheduled based on availability of harvest materials.
- Communicate with the botanical medicine department in order to grow and harvest plant materials needed for the medicine-making lab, provide updated list of plants growing in the medicinal garden, discuss and coordinate budget and discuss plant/seed selection for fall and spring plantings.
- Share knowledge and experience with visitors to the garden and coordinate garden tours with garden staff if requested.
Experience Required:At least 5 years of gardening, working with medicinal plants. Supervisory experience strongly recommended.
Broad knowledge of materia medica of North American and Southwestern medicinal plants and knowledge of desert environment regarding adaptation to planting in this area. Life cycle, botany, plant identification, cultivation techniques, resource and networking capacity with growers and suppliers, educational training and knowledge, supervisory skills, gardening, and cultivation experience; broad knowledge of botanical medicine and applications. Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling of up to 25 pounds. Ability to work outside throughout the year. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Communicate to perform essential functions.
