Job Summary
Our horticulturist of 30 years is retiring! If you are an experienced horticulturist and enjoy working outdoors, come work on the beautiful University of Utah campus grounds. Responsibilities
Effectively manage the living environment in your assigned section of the University's main campus in accordance with the University's vision of what our campus outdoor environment will provide to our students, staff and faculty.
Manage a crew consisting of an assistant horticulturist, an irrigation technician, and several gardeners to maintain and healthy and beautiful campus.
Perform the following Essential Functions:
-Plans, directs, and reviews horticulture maintenance programs including pruning, fertilizing, pest and disease control, watering and mulching.
-Ensures that all aspects of necessary maintenance and preservation of assigned outdoor garden areas and their living plant collections meet excellent horticultural and aesthetic expectations and achieve individual collection objectives.
-Serves as a professional horticulturist sharing knowledge with the public and in participation with committees.
-Enforces departmental and University policies and protocols, including but not limited to: Safety, Collections Management, Policy and Procedures. Assists in updating and improving department policies and procedures as requested.
-Manages assigned budget and provides recommendations for purchases.
-May interview, hire, train and supervise benefited staff, seasonal staff and volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Biology, or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), and two years of experience in horticulture. Strong knowledge and understanding of plant culture and best practices for ornamental and/or native plant care.
Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.
This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
