DescriptionThe Dane County Land and Water Resources Department has an opening for the LTE Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Watercraft Inspector and Beach Maintenance position in Madison, WI.NOTE:Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week. The LTE Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Watercraft Inspector and Beach Maintenance position will work a non-standard schedule that depends on water craft inspection times.Mandatory training will be required for all LTE employees. Training will be offered on two dates: May 19, 2025 and June 9, 2025. All hired LTE employees will be required to attend one training date. DEFINITIONUnder direction from the Dane County Land and Water Resources Department (LWRD), this classification is responsible for carrying out the duties of a watercraft inspector at select Dane County boat landings.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIESVisually inspect boats and other water recreational equipment for attached plants or animals. Demonstrate how to clean watercraft and what AIS preventative steps boaters must take every time they leave or enter waterways. Engage public through the use of educational materials and be able to identify common AIS species in Wisconsin. Provide information to recreational boaters and anglers regarding WI laws prohibiting AIS transport. Collect and record data on standard DNR reporting forms in accordance with the WI Clean Boats Clean Waters program. Accurately enter collected data to the WI Clean Boats Clean Waters data base weekly. Preserve any specimens that are potentially an aquatic invasive. Document any violations of the AIS transport rules and report them to the Water Guard Warden from the DNR's South Central Region. Assist in training potential volunteers on CBCW protocols. Conduct beach maintenance activities at County beaches and beach filtration systems.
Education, Experience and Special RequirementsEducation, Training and Experience: Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
Special Requirements: Requires a valid driver's license and good driving record. Must possess a Wisconsin DNR Boater Safety Certificate prior to the first day of employment. Must attend the Clean Boats Clean Waters training session upon hire. Must be able to work a variety of early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays. Such work hours will be scheduled to coincide with peak boat landing traffic whenever possible.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements: Must be able to lift 50 pounds, bend and climb. Work on uneven surfaces and aboard watercraft, including bending and climbing. Must have the ability to use hands/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling and operating controls and equipment. Work daily on the water in outdoors environment including heat, cold and inclement weather.
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesMust have basic computing skills for data entry and be able to upload data to the Clean Boats Clean Waters data base. Must be friendly, outgoing and able to approach strangers and initiate conversations while knowing when to back away from and avoid conflicts. Must be self-motivated, reliable, and able to perform duties with limited supervision.
