SALARY: $39,749 to $55,648 Annually
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION The Interior Horticulturist is responsible for management of the conservatory and production greenhouses and assists with planting and maintenance of the annual flowerbeds. The plants produced will be for the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens grounds, conservatory, gardens in the Paul Smith Children's Village, and for annual beds maintained by the City of Cheyenne. Responsibilities associated with interior horticulture include plant propagation, watering, fertilization, pest management, installation, plant grooming, and seasonal change out of plants. Work also consists of design of plant displays and assistance with interpretation. The Interior Horticulturist will be required to educate public about horticulture through on-site interaction, classes, and outreach education.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Implement horticultural tasks required to produce healthy plants in greenhouse.

- Maintain legally required chemical pesticide records.
- Research and schedule plant production for the annual and perennial beds that are the responsibility of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens
- Supervise and lead training for internship positions, volunteers, and staff.
- Develop educational activities, tours, and horticultural events at the Cheyenne Botanic
- Gardens and lead classes, tours, and outreach activities related to plant production,
gardening, and conservatory displays.
- Promote the mission of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens.
- Ensure interns, volunteers, staff, and public follow standardized safety protocols.
- Safely operate and maintain mechanical equipment including small equipment, sprayers,
mowers, trimmers, utility vehicles, and city vehicles.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Occasionally assist other staff with events, snow removal and overall operations not related to horticulture as needed.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Knowledge of general horticultural practices including plant identification, propagation, soil science, plant health, fertilization, pest identification, and pest control methods.
- Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a public garden.
- Knowledge of principles and practices in volunteer management
- Knowledge of effective customer service practices.
- Knowledge of the operations, maintenance, and repair of greenhouse infrastructure.
- Knowledge of and ability to use technology that supports public garden operations.
- Knowledge of and experience in plant display and garden design.
- Ability to develop work schedules and goals.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments within established deadlines.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive horticultural presentations and represent ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with complex situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to maintain safe working conditions for public, volunteers, and other staff members.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB Required:High School Diploma or equivalent AND a minimum of six months experience working in horticulture or a related field. Special consideration will be given to applicants that have a high level of energy, creativity, people skills, and experience working in public gardens.
Preferred:Wyoming Pesticide Applicator License will be required within (1) year of employment. Once obtained this license must be maintained in good standing while employed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Essential and marginal duties require a high level of stamina and a good physical condition. Daily duties may include moderate lifting (up to 45 lbs.), carrying, walking, repeated bending, being on your feet for most of the day, working with garden tools, working outside during adverse conditions, operating mechanical equipment, operation of computers, the ability to distinguish colors and the ability to drive city vehicles safely.
Working Environment:Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; cold, warm, humid, hot air may regularly occur; exposure to radiant energy and inclement weather; exposure to fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, and pest control agents. Outdoor environments in different seasons.
