Primary Purpose:
Monitors pool activities; enforces pool rules in and around the pool.
Qualifications / Licenses & Certifications:
American Red Cross Certifications:
- Lifeguarding Waterpark w/ CPR, First Aid, AED Training
- Blood borne Pathogens Training
- Administering Emergency Oxygen Training
- Asthma Inhaler and Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Training.
- No formal education required.
- Must be as least sixteen (16) years of age.
- Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements
Knowledge & Skills:
- Aquatics activities; lifeguarding; CPR and first aid application; water safety practices and procedures.
- Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrating strong swimming abilities.
- Providing tactful customer service
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Monitors pool activities; enforces pool rules in and around the pool.
- Identifies and responds to emergencies; administers care, CPR, or first aid as appropriate.
- Performs general maintenance in and around the pool.
- Provides excellent customer service.
- Attends required in-service training as required by the Department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- The incumbent must determine and enforce rule violations pertaining to the facility. Must ensure the safety of Aquatic patrons.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
- Must possess; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; to perform swimming and diving rescue techniques; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.
- The job involves frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator.
- Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, twist and reach when performing rescue and first aid activities, and maintaining pool area.
- Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
- Employees are exposed to loud noise levels, heights, hot temperatures, chemical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
Additional Requirements for Consideration:
- Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.
- Candidates may swim using the front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
- Surface dive, feet first or head first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Physical Requirements:
The indoor environment provides for a safe and healthy work environment and is smoke and drug free. Occasionally, it may be wet and humid, as well as moderately loud. The outdoor work environment may result in exposure to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, and humidity.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to see, speak, and hear. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
