Description This position performs professional work in the planning and design for City of Columbia projects; and performs related work as required. This class works within broad policy and organizational guidelines and does independent planning and implementation, reporting progress of major activities through periodic conferences and meetings.
The work is considered sedentary in nature and involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, fingering, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, traffic, moving machinery; and is dynamic that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
Essential Job Functions - Assists the City Landscape Architect in carrying out projects for the City of Columbia. Performs conceptual master planning, site design, park design, detailed construction drawings, cost estimating, and specification writing for a variety of city projects.
- Prepares and issues bid documents for a variety of city projects. Reviews bids and makes recommendations for value engineering and awarding contracts.
- Works cooperatively with city staff and project teams through construction administration to document field conditions, problem solve, prepare punch lists, and ensure projects are completed per the contract documents.
- Produces computer graphics varying from rendered site plans to technical construction drawings and details, including 3-D graphic perspectives as necessary to convey design ideas.
- Attends public meetings to review and present plans to citizen groups, developers, various governmental agencies, city council, planning commission, etc.
- Assists and facilitates public input meetings
- Assists in writing grant applications as needed
- Assists in analyzing and preparing budgets
- Demonstrates the ability to work independently and professionally, and make timely and appropriate decisions.
- Required to attend occasional community meetings after working hours.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
- Attends work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.
Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: - Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or closely related field
- 0-3 years of relevant prior experience preferred evidence of commitment to design excellence
- Ability to communicate with appropriate graphic skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe CS (Photoshop, InDesign Illustrator), 3D modeling (SketchUp, Lumion), and hand drawing. Experience with Revit, 3ds Max, AutoCAD Civil 3D and ArcGIS are a plus.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a close team environment
- Knowledge of landscape and hardscape materials, applications and construction

- Enthusiasm for the profession with an ability to work independently
- Valid South Carolina Class "D" Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Knowledge of site and park planning terminology, construction procedures, site development processes and procedures, recreational planning principles, and methods and techniques of land use and environmental site planning.
- Demonstrated skills in AutoCAD and computer generated graphics.
- Excellent verbal, graphic and written communication skills including developing, facilitating and leading presentations.
- Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.
- Ability to research, gather, organize and analyze information.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, government agencies, public officials, consultants, vendors, contractors and the public.
