Job SummaryWe are currently seeking a
Division Manager to lead our
Environmental Chemistry Division within our Environment & Agriculture Business Line. The Environmental Chemistry Division specializes in providing analytical services for accredited and performance-based methods for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as well as environmental chemicals. The division is responsible for traditional and non-traditional matrices, method development for emerging contaminants or client-specific needs, high end chemistry for characterization and forensics, and chemistry consulting for experimental design and data interpretation.
Battelle is seeking a highly energetic, talented, proactive, and self-motivated individual to lead our growing Environmental Chemistry team. The Division Manager is a very hands-on role and is responsible for the overall operations including division growth and profitability, staff management, vendor management, lab supply inventory, equipment maintenance requirements, new equipment orders, and maintaining a culture of safety and compliance. The Division Manager will work alongside Project Managers and Business Line Sales Leads (for both US Government and Commercial sales) on the implementation of the Environmental Chemistry strategy and the growth of the business.
This is a full-time, on-site role in
Norwell, MA, reporting to the Environment and Agriculture Business Line Director.
Responsibilities - Accountable for the overall profitable performance of the Environmental Chemistry Division. Maintain laboratory profitability and efficiency. Drive improvements in service level, efficiency, and cost reduction through standardization of common practices, implementation lean lab techniques and utilization of metrics.
- Lead annual business planning for the Division, monthly review of implementation, and quarterly performance forecast.
- Develops annual capital plan and laboratory special facilities budget.
- Establish and maintain an infrastructure to enable a structured laboratory operation including lab equipment and instrumentation (i.e., contracts, maintenance, repair, calibration, upgrade and retiring), and lab consumables (i.e., contracts, procurement, order management, inventory management).
- Personnel supervision, time management, and operational efficiency, as well as conflict resolution, personnel skills development and team building.
- Coordination and collaboration with critical corporate services (e.g., Facilities, CIT, Finance/Project Control, ES&H, Quality).
Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate - Understanding of the field of environmental chemistry including market needs, clients, and competitors.
- Proven track record in managing and scaling lab operations, including top-line revenue growth and bottom-line profitable performance.
- Known for being highly customer service oriented and has a track record of anticipating the needs of both internal and external customers.
- Demonstrated drive, curiosity, scientific rigor, and excellent problem-solving skills across a fast-paced performance driven environment.
- Ability to constructively challenge, improve and develop lab operations practices and processes.
- Self-motivated with the proven ability to take ownership and deliver results in an environment with ambiguity and change.
- Ability to collaborate cross functionally and align stakeholders to a common problem or solution.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills - Oral, written, and formal presentation skills.
- Creative and proactive problem solver; keen ability to anticipate needs in a lab environment, solving problems with sound judgment.
Key Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in chemistry. A degree in science or engineering related discipline may be acceptable if experience in analytical chemistry and/or management of analytical laboratories is demonstrated.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in operational leadership in an analytical laboratory.
- 5+ years of proven success leading teams of lab operations staff and vendors.
- 5+ years demonstrated experience with leading successful business development efforts for business growth.
- Must be authorized to work in US without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications - Advanced degree in Chemistry or Business.
- Experience working in an R&D and GLP laboratory environment.
- Subject matter expertise in PFAS.
