Position Overview The City of Wauwatosa is excited to be hiring a part-time Sustainability Manager! As part of the Department of Public Works team, this position will oversee the development and equitable implementation of the City's Sustainability Plan, Climate Adaptation Plan, programs, projects, and initiatives that drive the city to carbon neutrality across all sectors by 2050.
The pay range for this position is $37.57 - $48.00/hour. The role is part-time, 20 hours/week. Essential Functions - Work as the staff liaison to the Sustainability Committee including attendance at Sustainability Committee meetings (once/month evening commitment - currently first Wednesday) as well as supporting Committee's goals.
- Develop critical relationships with internal and external partners to advance the city's sustainability goals and objectives. Examples include business and civic groups, utilities, schools, neighboring communities, and utilities such as WE Energies and MMSD.
- Prepare and manage program budgets and schedules, secure funding for implementation, monitor progress, and coordinate activities with staff and other agencies.
- Establish and implement a sustainability data management process to track greenhouse gas emissions, water use, solid waste to landfill, recycling, and other sustainability measures as needed.
- Coordinate as needed with other city departments on sustainability goals and projects; advise and update city departments and the Common Council on sustainability issues.
- Develop and implement comprehensive sustainability plan, smart city concepts, and resulting programs and policies including facilitation of intra-departmental and interdepartmental coordination to support city sustainability goals and policies.
- Provide technical assistance on city projects including review and incorporation of green infrastructure practices into applicable capital projects.
- Convene and coordinate a multi-stakeholder advisory team to get input from residents on their priorities and to build community buy-in on sustainability goals.
- Create measurable performance objectives, cost assessments, and tracking methods to measure and analyze sustainability programs for effective sustainability decision-making.
- Assist with preparing annual updates of the City's Sustainability Plan.
- Develop effective communication and community engagement strategy in collaboration with the City's Communications Manager on sustainability programs, projects, and initiatives.
- Prepare oral and written reports and presentations covering various sustainability issues for staff, city and other government officials, citizens, businesses, community groups and stakeholders.
- Assist Communications Manager with the development of marketing and outreach media for sustainability projects, initiatives and events. This includes an annual report highlighting key programs and projects, major successes and progress, and identifying future goals and initiatives.
- Represent Wauwatosa in regional and statewide sustainability groups to ensure alignment and benefit from their learnings.
Minimum Requirements - Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences, Urban Affairs/Planning, Sustainability Studies, Architecture or Architectural Studies, Public Administration/Policy, Engineering, Physical Science, Natural Science, Biological Science, Business Administration or closely related field.
- Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in one or more of the following areas: sustainability, environmental protection, climate protection, energy regulation, transportation, waste reduction, policy development, project management, strategic planning, economics, or government environmental regulations. Preferred: Experience in coordinating sustainability and resiliency related projects, sustainability reporting frameworks such as GRI, community engagement, and public speaking.
- WI Driver License required
- Commitment to continuous process improvement and high standards for service excellence.
- Proficiency in computer operations including Word and Excel.
- Previously demonstrated leadership abilities.
Preferred Qualifications- Master's degree in Sustainability Studies, Renewable and Clean Energy, Urban Affairs/Planning, Architecture or Architectural Studies, Public Administration/Policy, Law, Economics, Business Administration or closely related field.
- Preferred Certifications: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credentials, Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or Certified Sustainable Development Professional (CSDP).
Additional InformationPhysical DemandsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, twist, and reach. The employee is required to use hands to finger, type, handle, or feel. The employee must be able to lift up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
