General Information The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for Furman Aquatic Center Swim Instructors for the 2025 Summer Season!
Candidates interested in this opportunity can expect to work during day and evening hours, weekdays, April through September.
Swim Instructors are directly accountable to the Shift Leaders, Recreation Assistant and Aquatics Manager, and adjunctly accountable to the Recreation Superintendent and the Director of Parks & Recreation.
Examples of Essential Job Functions Instruct patrons on the basic fundamentals of swimming and water safety; enforce procedures and rules for patrons at all facilities/locations; inspect pool areas for possible safety hazards to ensure a safe environment; and teach good sportsmanship at all times.

Qualifications Age Requirement:
- Must be at least 14 years of age.
Experience:
- Previous experience is preferred but not required.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Current CPR, First Aid and AED.
Candidates not possessing the required certifications may still apply. On-site training and certification will be provided by the City, free of charge.
If you possess the Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate and/or Water Safety Instructor Certification, please attach the certificate(s) to your application!Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong swimming ability preferred.
- Knowledge of swimming instruction and water safety principles preferred.
- Skill in being organized, dependable, and reliable.
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor (calm and courteous) at all times while on site.
- Ability to teach basic fundamentals to patrons of various ages.
- Ability to communicate with parents and patrons.
- Ability to maintain an exceptional level of safety.
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance at all times while on site (see dress code).
- Ability to understand, appreciate and embody the City of Ames Core Values.
