Position Title:Natural Resource Specialist 2 (Beaver Conservation Biologist )

Opportunity Awaits, Apply Today!As a Natural Resource Specialist 2 - Beaver Conservation Biologist in Newport, Oregon, you will respond to beaver conflict complaints with private landowners to provide various solutions such as advice with non-lethal techniques, consideration of potential relocation opportunities, and documentation of lethal removal actions for immediate infrastructure threats. These duties are prioritized on forestland ownerships throughout the Coast Range tributaries draining westerly. Duties include:
- Beaver habitat restoration
- Beaver damage field response
- Beaver research, monitoring and evaluation
- Conduct public outreach

WORKING CONDITIONS- Requires operating vehicles with manual or automatic transmissions and 4-wheel drive vehicles during the day or at night, occasionally pulling a boat or other type of trailer
- Work and drive in remote locations on adverse terrain in sometimes inclement weather
- Requires physical ability to travel, on foot, in all types of terrain and weather, sometimes for long distances
- Occasional work in aircraft, such as helicopters.
- Work many weekends, holidays and evenings, including unusual hours
- Respond to emergency environmental problems, such as chemical spills
- May involve contact with irate landowners/public/hunters/anglers
- This position requires annual first aid/CPR training and certification
- This position requires Wildlife Capture and Immobilization Training every three years
- This position requires Firearm Safety Training (Hunter Ed, Firearm Safety)
- This position requires occasional use of a firearm and munitions to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals and birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters. The intended use does not include physical force, personal protection, or personal use. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check with fingerprinting to verify s/he may legally possess a firearm and munitions before being hired into this position, and the employee will be subject to annual checks during employment. Training must be taken prior to using or transporting a firearm.
- This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor
Within the first six months of employment this position requires:
- Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board
- Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response training certification (HAZWOPER) to respond to hazardous material spill events
- All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads and three-wheeled ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORMinimum Qualifications Two years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program
that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports,
and a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework;
or three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program;

OR-One year biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program
that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports,
and a Master's degree Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences;

OR-A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.
Applicants who have obtained a Master's degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience.
The Master's degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately, and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.
Desired Attributes- Experience developing and implementing protocols (Hunting, Trapping, Habitat Restoration)
- Experience working with diverse user groups including private landowners, recreational trappers, hunters, conservation groups, public landowners, and the general public
- Conflict resolution experience
- Experience driving pickup safely on private/public gravel, paved roads during adverse weather conditions
- Experience working independently and, on a team, with diverse individuals.
- Experience handling multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
- Experience working outdoors in adverse conditions and topography
- Experience implementing rules and policies with wildlife users
