Reports to: Security Manager Status: Full time or part time; non-exempt (in-person required) BACKGROUND Shangri La is a vibrant compound situated on a spectacular, 5-acre, oceanside property in Honolulu. It integrates a 14,000-square-foot house with multiple outbuildings, comprising a series of interlocking spaces, both indoors and out: rooms, courtyards, lanais, terraces, gardens and numerous water features. The property includes spaces for reflection and for gatherings. Historically operated exclusively as a museum to showcase some of its collection of 2,500 objects from diverse Muslim cultures, Shangri La is in the midst of a strategic transformation that envisions the institution as a global center for personal and societal transformation. Shangri La is owned and operated by the Doris Duke Foundation (DDF), whose mission is to build a more creative, equitable and sustainable future. The Shangri La Security Officer is an experienced security professional who plays a pivotal role in upholding the integrity and safety of this unique center, directly contributing to the advancement of DDF’s mission. The Security Officer ensures a secure and welcoming environment for staff and visitors, bringing a blend of experienced vigilance and thoughtful engagement with security protocols, alongside a welcoming and positive demeanor. RESPONSIBILITIES Engage with staff and visitors in a friendly and approachable manner, providing assistance and information to enhance their experience while ensuring their safety and security. Operate and monitor security control panels, closed-circuit television, alarms, fire sprinklers and related security and safety equipment. Monitor all on-site activities such as tours, programs, construction, routine maintenance, etc. Provide security support for programs (e.g., public tours and residencies), events and convenings. Maintain constant awareness of current conditions and respond to all alarms and emergencies in accordance with written procedures. Comply with daily reporting requirements, including timely completion of daily shift logs, dispatch logs, and incident and injury reports. Participate in regular emergency response drills and training sessions. Support the testing, inspection, maintenance and continuous operation of security and life safety systems. Other reasonable tasks as requested. QUALIFICATIONS Work experience in security, public safety, law enforcement or other related field. High school degree or equivalent is preferred. Valid guard license with the State of Hawai‘i or ability to obtain one within three weeks of offer. Proven experience monitoring and responding to emergency situations. Proficient in using and caring for all security-related equipment. Skilled in using and operating safety, fire prevention, building and grounds maintenance equipment. Training in CPR and automated external defibrillator, or ability to be trained to administer basic first aid. Organized individual with good judgment and ability to problem-solve. Excellent visual attention to detail and the ability to observe subtle physical environmental changes. Ability to act decisively, remain calm and respond quickly in an emergency. Effective oral and written communication skills. Comfortable with interacting with staff and the public, including resolving conflicts. Physical capability to perform duties, including standing, walking and sitting for extended periods. Flexibility to work varying shifts, hours and days including weekends, special events and emergency situations. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Anticipated hourly rate is $21.50 - $26.50, and the final offer will depend on experience. Industry-leading benefits, including a 15% employer contribution to 401(k).
