Overview Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Responsibilities The Applied Materials and Manufacturing Group at PNNL is seeking a materials scientist with expertise in composite materials to perform research in the area of solid phase processing (SPP). This is an extraordinary opportunity to be part of a world-class, interdisciplinary research program that is pushing the envelope on next generation composites manufacturing for a variety of technology applications. PNNL’s research in this area seeks to understand the underpinning physics of material evolution in polymers and metals with fillers/additives subjected to high strain at temperatures below melting during synthesis and to translate that understanding to application in a suite of scalable manufacturing platforms that can deliver materials and components with exceptional performance. This position will be hands-on with SPP technologies such as friction extrusion, and shear-assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE). The position holder will explore the relationship between processing conditions, microstructure, and performance. Development of material- and application-specific processing approaches, protocols, and parameters will be required. The successful candidate can expect to prepare manuscripts for publication, communicate research context and findings internally and externally, and develop new ideas for research. The position holder will: Develop and execute experimental plans to synthesize and characterize metal- and polymer-composites for applications in grid, EVs, and buildings. Serve as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Direct laboratory work with the support of other technical staff. Mentor limited term employees such as masters and PhD interns, and postdoctoral research scholars. Analyze project data, formulate conclusions, and communicate them in verbal and written forms effectively. Support scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or task level. Author and contribute to scientific publications, technical reports, presentations at professional society conferences and/or to sponsors and industrial collaborators. At the level of this Materials Scientist 3 position, the expectations are that the researcher has developed a technical specialization within this domain and is working to grow their external reputation by advancing science and engineering principles and theories; developing innovative technical approaches to solve challenges; building a technical network within and external to PNNL; teaming with others to optimize research; and mentoring junior staff and students. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience, a MS/MA and 3 years of relevant experience, or a PhD with 1 year of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, chemistry, or related field with 3 years of industrial or national research laboratory experience, or MS/MA with 5 years of similar experience. Experience in mechanical or electrical testing of materials using standard methods and test equipment. Strong understanding of design of experiments and statistical analysis of experimental data. Good understanding of manufacturing techniques and quality controls. Demonstrated experience in working in an interdisciplinary team. Interest and experience in data analyses and machine learning. Detail oriented; self-motivated; and works well with deadlines to deliver high quality, timely results. Demonstrated ability to communicate research motivation, approach selection, and results to a variety of audiences. Track record of publication. Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Not Applicable. Additional Information Not Applicable. Testing Designated Position Not a Testing Designated Position.
