For five decades, the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) has played a pivotal role in shaping the fields of environmental law, policy, and management, both domestically and internationally. ELI is seeking a Project Accountant to join our Finance Team. This position is fully responsible for preparing financial reports and invoices for projects in compliance with funder guidelines. Projects are generally funded by foundations, U.S. Government, and other NGOs. The Project Accountant will prepare internal project financial reports for use by project managers and will work closely with the Grants Manager on project budget development and proposal generation. RESPONSIBILITIES Effectively communicate with Grants Manager regarding award documents, amendments and other funding modifications, approvals, and any additional services-related to billing. Partner with the Vice President of Research & Policy to effectively manage all project budgets. Set up new projects in accounting system and record receivables into appropriate account. Understand and apply appropriate indirect rates to project financials. Prepare federal drawdowns with appropriate supporting documentation. Prepare and send final invoice package and financial reports to funders utilizing the reporting calendar. Assess and pursue opportunities for maximizing funder billing; communicate with the Grants Manager with observations and actions. Research and interact with Grants Manager to resolve any overspending/underspending of all active contracts and restricted grants. Assist in completion of filing/reporting/monitoring of all federal grants in compliance with the Uniform Guidance and OMB circulars. Understand revenue recognition for Contracts with Customer ASC 606 and contributions ASC 958. Maintain the financial folders for all projects, with all the appropriate documents, including expenses, consultant invoices, and monthly invoices, in accordance with standard procedures. Provide year-end support of audit requirements, which may include research and reconciliation. Assist Grants Manager with proposals and budget development, communicate and coordinate with the Grants Manager and Project Managers. Assist with payroll preparation, and ensure the accuracy of timecards, review job coding, hours allocation, supervisor approval. In the execution of all job functions, ensure that all ELI’s accounting policies and procedures are followed. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s Degree or some college courses in accounting or business preferred. Experience with non-profit accounting and financials. Strong computing and technology skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel software. Experience with cloud-based accounting software; Jamis Software preferred. Experience with 2CFR200 (Uniform Guidance). Knowledge of standard contract terms, including hourly, lump sum, not-to-exceed and how they are applied in the billing process. Ability to work well with others under deadline situations and respond to changes in priorities. Good interpersonal communication skills and strong critical thinking attention to detail, and organizational skills.
