The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denver's physical resources in order to provide a healthy and safe educational environment for campus community through services of the departments of Capital Projects and Planning, Facilities Management, Parking & Mobility Services, Auxiliaries & Real Estate, and Business & Operations. Position Summary This position coordinates day to day activities and special projects associated with the University’s regulated waste disposal, laboratory safety and biosafety programs. This position will report to the Director of EHS and may supervise student or temporary employees. Essential Functions Develop, implement, monitor and continuous improvement of EHS programs ensuring compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Provide regulatory oversight of hazardous waste generators; conducts inspections to ensure regulatory compliance in storage, treatment, handling, minimization, transportation, disposal and record keeping related to the generation of hazardous waste. Perform routine hazardous waste management activities such as waste inventories, vendor scheduling and manifest tracking and filing. Interprets and applies complex laws and regulations concerning storage, use, and regulation of hazardous materials; provides information on laws and regulations to University shareholders. Assists in training staff; develops and conducts training sessions on special topics as directed by management. Conduct laboratory safety inspection and safety assessments, independently conduct complex inspections of University research and academic laboratories to assess existing and potential health hazards, and determine compliance with University policies and numerous applicable regulations. Serve as the University Chemical Hygiene Officer. Maintain OSHA laboratory standards, hazard communication program and conduct chemical inventory. Conduct job hazard analysis and oversee personnel medical surveillance. Respond to emergencies on campus, including non-business hours on occasion. Assist with maintenance and modification of EHS website. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Ability and willingness to wear a variety of respirators and personal protective equipment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work both effectively and cooperatively with a wide range of people in a diverse community. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree involving major study in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, microbiology or other related field from an accredited college or university. Three years of experience in a related field. HAZWOPER certified within 90 days of employment. Deep understanding of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Preferred Qualifications CHMM certification. Experience in higher education. Master’s degree in a related field. Experience lab packing laboratory chemical waste. Working Environment Occasional work that requires the use of a respirator and other personal protective equipment. Some nighttime work or weekend work will be required for emergency response. Physical Activities Considerable physical activity on occasion. May require heavy physical work and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Salary Grade Number: The salary grade for the position is 12. Salary Range: The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000. The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.
