Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (in-Training) - Spokane Hatchery - Permanent - 07059-24 SPOKANE HATCHERY Fish Program – Hatcheries Division Spokane, Washington – Spokane County STANDBY DUTIES ARE NOT CURRENTLY ASSIGNED HOUSING IS NOT PROVIDED This position requires a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsement within 6 months of hire (training provided). Be a part of the future of fish conservation in Washington while gaining valuable hands-on experience Perform scientific, technical, and maintenance duties at Spokane Hatchery and trap sites within the complex, and rear anadromous species of fish. We are recruiting to hire at the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2 level, and we will train a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 up to the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2. Depending on which level you are hired at, your salary range will be as follows: Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 - $3,145 - $4,174 monthly Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 - $3,454 - $4,602 monthly In this dynamic role, you will influence the rate of development of eggs and fry by temperature manipulation of water. With your experience, you will load trucks according to safe hauling densities, utilize proper oxygen levels and monitor fish during transport. The optimal applicant understands correct safety protocols for all hazardous chemicals/drugs used for all treatments and chemical storage/handling. Duties: Here are some things you will do in this role: Fish Culture: Monitors fish behavior and health. Monitors egg and fish production and disinfects and enumerates eggs. Administers therapeutics, calculates, and administers drugs as prescribed by fish health specialist. Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health. Records data and can identify multiple marks by sight, UV lights or mechanical devices. Performs fish inventories, splits and weight samples and plants. Operation and Maintenance of Facility and Equipment: Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments. Responds to alarms and takes appropriate action to preserve facility programs, tests alarms and reports failures to agency personnel. Monitors and maintains facility support systems. Actively identifies safety hazards and acts or recommends remedies as appropriate. Performs maintenance duties in and around hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Outside in all weather conditions, typically about 250 days a year. Will be required to repetitively lift at least 50lbs. Use respirator and other PPE while working with various chemicals used at facility. Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Schedule: Typically, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday. Travel Requirements: Travel may be required to accomplish agency goals. Tools and Equipment: Perform mechanical tasks using power and hand tools. Customer Interactions: Communicate effectively with public and volunteers. Standby: Standby duties are not currently assigned. Housing: Housing is not provided for this position. Qualifications: This Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (In-Training) series provides mentoring and career development opportunities for candidates with limited hatchery and fish culture experience. Candidates will be hired as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2, dependent on skills and experience. Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month in-training plan, the selected candidate will automatically be promoted to a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2. Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education. Or An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology, or a closely allied field. Or Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or a closely allied field. Or Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school. License: Valid driver’s license. Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: A class “B” CDL is required or must be obtained within 6 months. Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2: One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 and successful completion of agency supervised training program. Or An associate degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field and one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. Or Two (2) years of education towards a bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field and one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. Or Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school and one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. Please note: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education. License: Valid driver’s license. Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: A class “B” CDL is required or must be obtained within 6 months. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: Two- or four-year degree in Fisheries or closely associated field.
