Responsibilities and Duties The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall maintenance, operation, and functionality of the hotel's physical plant and engineering systems. This includes overseeing the maintenance staff, managing projects, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and implementing preventative maintenance programs. Responsible for interviewing, training, supervising, counseling, scheduling, and evaluating staff. Assume the Manager on Duty role in the event of lesser superior management presence. Directly responsible for the maintenance and operation of all equipment on the property site including refrigeration and air conditioning, fire alarm systems, boilers, primary and secondary power systems, and emergency generators. Responsible for the aesthetics of the exterior and interior of the building, continuously evaluating remodeling projects and scheduling labor and materials for these projects. Strong understanding of building and equipment including external utilities such as water, power, gas, sewer, and internal utilities, power systems, and fire protection. Train new and current employees while providing coaching and constructive feedback. Implement policies and procedures to ensure energy conservation throughout the hotel. Conduct department meetings/training in accordance with Onix Hospitality's and Brand standards including maintenance techniques and safe use of cleaning products. Ensure that Onix Hospitality’s and Brand standards are met in all physical areas of the hotel. Monitor compliance with state building codes, OSHA safety codes, and Fire Department standards of safety and evacuation procedures. Cooperate with all Department Heads and set up departmental meetings. Monitor any new construction and interact as necessary with designers, architects, contractors, and public utilities. Coordinate hotel emergency procedures with the General Manager and develop an effective emergency plan for the hotel. Conduct drills with staff and train staff on the operation of emergency systems and equipment. Inform the General Manager promptly of all problems or unusual matters of significance. This is a hands-on position requiring working shifts, availability to work weekends, holidays, and flexibility when called in for emergencies. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field (preferred). Proven experience in hotel maintenance or a similar role. Strong leadership and managerial skills. Knowledge of building systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems. Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, and safety standards. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Must be able to push, pull, move, lift, and/or carry a minimum of 50 lbs. a minimum of 5 ft. in distance. Requires reaching overhead, climbing, crouching, and twisting. Must be reliable and willing to work long hours, holidays, and weekends. Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
