About Zero Waste Palo Alto: Zero Waste Palo Alto in the City’s Environmental Services Division is recruiting for a team member with a passion for communicating with the public the requirements of materials management, and with experience working with businesses to reach compliance with solid waste, compost and recycling requirements. The Zero Waste Team is tasked with protecting the environment and public health by sustainably managing Palo Alto’s solid and hazardous waste as well as the closed landfill, and helping the community reach its Zero Waste goal. About the Position: The Zero Waste Coordinator position is an essential member of a collaborative team helping Palo Alto reach its Zero Waste goals. This position, with direction and general supervision, is responsible for: Review of entitlement and building plans to ensure projects comply with the City’s solid waste collection, removal and disposal requirements Ensure commercial customers and City facilities are in compliance with the City’s solid waste requirements Collaborate with the City’s contractor to conduct and document commercial inspections Assist with the review and audit of refuse billing services Respond to customer inquiries, complaints and refuse service issues Ideal Candidate Qualities: Strong knowledge of Zero Waste concepts and solid waste field Experience communicating zero waste best management practices and ordinance requirements to residential and commercial customers Excellent verbal and written communication skills Additional responsibilities include: Coordinates development and research of solid waste reduction activities. Develops and implements zero waste outreach and technical assistance for residential, commercial, school, and multi-unit complex customers. Serve as staff liaison with community advisory committee. Develop and implement public awareness plan for use throughout community. Prepare monthly material financial report and maintain program statistics. Writes staff reports to Council, write letters and reports on recycling activities. Participates as City liaison with other government agencies to provide information/evaluation of all phases of recycling. Directs Program Assistants, volunteers, and temporary staff. Review and evaluate proposed legislation of interest to the City; including preparation of position paper. Keep abreast of current developments, trends, and practices in the field of zero waste and resource recovery. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, environmental studies or equivalent. Three years of experience working as a zero waste coordinator or in a position involving public contact and recycling or conservation programs. Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
