Job DescriptionThis position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our to determine if you qualify.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1/2 Flex located in Fairbanks!What you will be doing:The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a 10-month seasonal Fishery Biologist 1 located in Fairbanks, Alaska (Region III). This position is flexibly staffed and may be filled at either the Fisheries Biologist 1, or 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. If filled at the lower level, the successful applicant will have a training plan to progress in their development until reaching the Fisheries Biologist 2 level.
The primary scope of this position is to plan and execute anadromous species research projects for Region 3- Sport Fish. At the FB1 level, the incumbent for this position will be responsible for overseeing operations of up to two counting towers (one with sonar) and carcass sampling portions of the projects. Duties include disseminating data daily, logistical planning and budgeting, executing field research, data analysis, producing fisheries data series drafts (FDS) and other reports documenting the project while leading Fish and Wildlife Technician IIs and IIIs. At the FB2 level, the incumbent should be able to work more independently and take on further project responsibilities including planning of additional anadromous species research projects as available. This position will be supervised by a Fishery Biologist III.
The individual in this position must be able to understand and apply principles of fisheries research and statistical and scientific methods to the designing and interpreting of research projects; be able to lead a group of up to twelve motivated research technicians (F&WT II, III, and IVs); be able to operate and deploy sonar equipment; be able to code and analyze data in program R; be able to effectively articulate complex and controversial biological and scientific ideas and results of fisheries research to internal and public groups; and, be able function well as a member of a team oriented work force. Additionally, this position often requires the incumbent to be available outside of regular work hours/days and irregular or extended workdays may be required during the field season.
The key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Running all facets of assigned research projects including writing operational plans, developing and maintaining budgets, preparing equipment and supplies for field work, executing data collection in the field, analyzing data and interpreting results, and producing appropriate reports.
- Ensuring all contractual obligations and reporting requirements are met.
- Working with biometric staff to ensure projects are designed so they may be analyzed in a statistically sound manner.
- Monitoring fishery research projects to ensure data are collected in accordance with operational plans, and if necessary, adjusting equipment placement, and personnel schedules as needed to ensure accurate research data and results.
- Leading field technicians.

The working conditions you can expect:The position is located in Fairbanks, Alaska. At the Fishery Biologist 1 level, the incumbent will be responsible for planning and implementing 1-2 research projects annually. At the Fishery Biologist 2 level, the incumbent will be responsible for planning and implementing up to 3 projects annually. The resulting information will be used by managers to make decisions that ensure sustainable sport fisheries.

Minimum QualificationsFishery Biologist 1A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
Fishery Biologist 2A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 1, Fish Culturist 1, Wildlife Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitutions:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
