Job DescriptionThis position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our to determine if you qualify. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 1 located in Fairbanks! What you will be doing:Assist the wood bison project biologist in preparations for and release of wood bison to the wild. The employee that fills this position will play an integral role in increasing the number of wood bison in the wild. The duties will include preparing for and executing the logistics of transporting bison from Canada to a captive location, and then to the wild. More specifically, the duties will include equipment preparation and maintenance, assisting with bison capture and disease testing protocols, shipping container preparation and use, coordination with shipping companies, feeding and caring for bison during their holding period, and monitoring their release.

The working environment you can expect: This position is based at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office, on the scenic Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge located in Fairbanks at 1300 College Road. Also, much time will be spent at the soft release pen in the Minto Flats State Game Refuge, UAF Large Animal Research Station, and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Some travel to villages for meetings will also be required.
Who we are looking for:The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is hiring a Long-Term Non-Perm Fish and Wildlife Biologist 1 stationed in Fairbanks.
We are looking for a candidate that possesses some or all of the following position-specific competencies:
The candidate must have significant experience working with large animals, preferably bison, and be able to demonstrate how they remained calm and collected during difficult situations with those animals.
- The candidate must possess training in the handling of wildlife capture pharmaceuticals.
- The candidate must be able to cordially communicate with a diverse public in difficult situations.
- The candidate must be able to travel whenever the bison need attention, including weekends or holidays.
- The candidate must be able to camp solo in a wilderness environment and the candidate must be willing to work any hour of the night or day in inclement weather, if it is necessary for the health and safety of the bison.

Minimum QualificationsA bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
Substitution:A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note: "Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
