Job DescriptionThis position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our to determine if you qualify.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 3 located in Fairbanks!What you will be doing:This position serves as the Area Biologist for Game Management Units 20A, 20B, 20C, 20F, and 25C, a 40,000 square mile area in interior Alaska which includes a portion of the Alaska Range, Tanana River Valley, and the Tanana uplands and White Mountains, and portions of the Yukon River drainage. Some of the prominent resources that are managed include moose, Dall's sheep, and caribou along with grizzly and black bears, wolves, furbearers, and small game. The incumbent will be responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, conducting, and evaluating complex management programs for the above listed species, provide clear and effective communication with the public and stakeholder groups, as well as supervise an assistant area biologist.

This position provides a wealth of opportunity to gain experience in many different aspects of wildlife management including wildlife captures, surveys, data analysis, scientific writing, public presentations, nuisance wildlife response, and development of hunting and trapping regulations.
The working conditions you can expect:This position is located in Fairbanks at the regional office. This allows the incumbent to work closely with other biologists and utilize the vast knowledge and expertise within the office. Duties can vary on a day-to-day basis, so this position rarely gets monotonous. The incumbent may spend the day in a small aircraft flying a moose survey, working in an urban environment dealing with a moose in a school yard, sitting at a computer analyzing data or attending a local advisory committee meeting. The office itself is located at Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl refuge, with opportunities for winter and summer recreation.
Who we are looking for:We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Experience managing or researching wildlife habitat, big game, furbearers, or small game species.
- Experience planning and conducting aerial wildlife surveys and capture projects using drugs and animal capture equipment; including collecting, analyzing, archiving, and reporting data, flying in small aircraft and coordinating logistics for remote fieldwork.
- Experience working with an impassioned, vocal, and interested public, especially hunters, trappers, as well as preparing presentations for public meetings.
- Experience preparing, formatting, writing, and editing management reports, scientific papers, or management plans for wildlife species.
- Knowledge of or experience with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game hunting regulations, trapping regulations and the Board of Game regulatory process.

Ability to legally carry a firearm (no felony convictions).
Minimum QualificationsA bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
