Job DescriptionThis position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our to determine if you qualify.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 2 located in Anchorage, Bethel, or Fairbanks!What you will be doing:As the Kuskokwim area assistant management biologist (FB2), you will be joining a highly qualified team of research and management biologists on the beautiful Kuskokwim River. The FB2 is responsible for managing the Kuskokwim Bay fisheries, participating in research projects, training and supervising technicians, working with the public, and representing the Department at professional meetings. This is an interesting and rewarding fishery to work in with a diversity of tasks throughout the year, and the opportunity to develop new research partnerships and projects to further enrich management decision making. This position will either be a permanent full-time position located in Bethel or have a split duty station that works from Fairbanks or Anchorage for 8-9 months and relocates to Bethel for 3-4 months in the summer.

The mission of the Division of Commercial Fisheries is to manage subsistence, commercial, and personal use fisheries in the interest of the economy and general well-being of the citizens of the state, consistent with the sustained yield principle, and subject to allocations through public regulatory processes. The division's core service is to ensure the conservation of natural stocks of fish, shellfish and aquatic plants based on scientifically sound assessments.
As the Assistant Area Management Biologist, your work would contribute to the division's mission and goals by overseeing collaborative sustainable fisheries management programs and the collection of biological data from stock assessment projects used directly to manage the Kuskokwim Area salmon and herring populations.
Benefits of joining our team: This is a full-time, year-round professional position that includes field work in remote and beautiful locations as well as benefits such as retirement, health and leave. The summer season is in Bethel, where a comfortable bunkhouse and vehicle are provided as well as a pay differential. While the summer season requires long hours, you earn flex time, which can be used in the wintertime to allow for additional paid leave. The Kuskokwim River and Bay is home to the Yupik and Dene peoples with a rich history of salmon stewardship. There are many research partners and room for more development. The fisheries research and management team is composed of hardworking, dedicated professionals who work to protect and enhance Alaska's fish and the fisheries that depend on them.
The working conditions you can expect:In-season management can be intense with physical and intellectual work and limited opportunities for time off, but there is time available for fishing and berry-picking. This position manages the Kuskokwim Bay which involves visiting the communities of Quinhagak and Goodnews Bay and visiting field sites to assist with projects. Daily tasks are varied and include serving the public, supporting field projects, analyzing data, collaborating with interagency and non-governmental organizations to support research and management objectives. Public meetings are held weekly and aerial surveys are performed annually.
- In-season summer management is done in Bethel. If the duty station is not Bethel, the incumbent will spend 3-4 months in the Bethel area, some breaks will be negotiable.
- There will be frequent travel via small planes and in open skiffs.
- Requires frequent travel to attend meetings throughout the year.
- The applicant must be able to handle firearms under state regulations.
Who we are looking for:We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Make objective/evidence-based decisions and take accountability for those decisions.
- Experience with general principles of fisheries management
- Experience supervising remote field camp staff including remote logistics
- Experience communicating science or risk management with the public, including in person communications and creating written and visual communication aids such as informational social media posts and video editing.
- Experience with computer programs such Microsoft office suite including Excel/Word, database programs, Arc GIS, and R.

First Aid and CPR certification
Minimum QualificationsA bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 1, Fish Culturist 1, Wildlife Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitutions:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
A master's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management, will substitute for the required year of professional level biologist experience. An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required master's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
Special Note:"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
