ABOUT THIS POSITION Phoenix provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserve land with more than 200 miles of trails; 185 parks; 32 community and recreation centers; eight golf courses; 29 pools where thousands cool off and learn to swim each summer; and classes, programs, and sports leagues where kids and adults learn, stay active and have fun!
Gardeners are responsible for performing landscaping, maintenance, re-vegetation, and restoration for parks, surrounding streets and highways, specifically maintaining and policing assigned areas, trimming trees, conducting weed control, cultivating, and fertilizing various plant species, operating mowing equipment, and trouble-shooting irrigation systems. Additional duties include general park maintenance work such as litter patrol, raking and emptying trash receptacles, checking, and spraying plants for diseases and insect control, fertilizing plants, trees and grass, and maintaining urban lakes.
Gardeners who have the assignment of Sprinkler Systems are responsible for the same landscape maintenance requirements and provide expertise of irrigation maintenance, repair, and installation. Current vacancies are located throughout all geographical areas of the Parks and Recreation Department.
SALARY Gardener Pay Range: $ 17.30 - $31.06 per hour.
Hiring Range: $17.30 - $23.18 per hour.
Gardener *Sprinkler SystemPay Range: $17.72 - $31.82 per hour.
Hiring Range: $17.72 - $24.93 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - One year of experience in the care and maintenance of trees, plants, shrubs, turf and lawns.
- Hold a State of Arizona Office of Pest management (OPM) Applicator License within six months of hire.

- Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
- Requires walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
- Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.

Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience using power equipment and/or tools.
- Certifications related to the industry such as ALCA, water management, etc.
- Experience in general irrigation.
- Experience using computer programs.
- Experience providing strong customer service.
- Experience with sprinkler system repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Experience in applying herbicides and insecticides.
