Job DetailsPOSITION SUMMARY:The
Director of Environmental Sustainability, as the senior most expert within the company, develops and executes Cencora's global environmental strategy, which is focused on resilient and sustainable operations. This strategic leader shapes the company's long-term sustainability goals, guiding cross-functional initiatives to integrate sustainability practices across all business functions. The Director leads initiatives around emission reduction, waste management, sustainable buildings, climate risks, and environmental reporting, resulting in impactful outcomes.
By engaging internal and external stakeholders, the Director drives continuous improvement in complex data processes and progress towards Science Based Targets. Additionally, the Director educates senior management on strategies to secure resources, which requires a track record of strategic leadership and operational execution. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Strategic Leadership & Vision- Lead the development and execution of Cencora's global environmental and decarbonization strategies, aligning with corporate objectives to address climate change risks and promote long-term value.
- Drive towards reaching sustainability targets, ensuring measurable progress across business units.
- Champion the integration of environmental sustainability considerations into enterprise risk management and business strategy, focusing on resilient and sustainable operations, incorporating climate-related risk assessment findings into business continuity planning.
Carbon & Climate Risk Management- Oversee the company's GHG inventory and carbon reduction strategy, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, and lead the evaluation and continuous improvement of a comprehensive global carbon management framework.
- Develop and implement a decarbonization roadmap to achieve Cencora's science-based and other targets for carbon reduction, including supplier engagement.
- Spearhead the enterprise's renewable energy procurement strategy.
- Provide oversight and guidance on sustainability-related data analytics and reporting, including carbon emissions forecasting and measurement.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Operational Integration- Collaborate with business units, across the supply chain and with procurement teams, to implement and optimize sustainability initiatives across global operations.
- Develop sustainability performance metrics and KPIs, integrating them into departmental goals and corporate reporting frameworks.
- Draft and implement globally relevant sustainability guidelines and policies.
- Partner with sales and marketing to develop tools and resources that communicate sustainability efforts to stakeholders.
Executive & Operational Engagement- Engage with executive leadership on sustainability matters, providing strategic recommendations and updates on progress.
- Present and influence senior management on key environmental issues, ensuring alignment with long-term corporate strategy and shareholder value.
- Advise senior leaders on evolving environmental regulations, industry standards, and investor expectations.
Sustainability Reporting & Compliance- Oversee preparation and submission of annual reporting and sustainability disclosures, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and alignment with frameworks including CDP, GRI, SASB, as well as regulatory reporting such as CSRD and CSDDD.
- Ensure compliance with sustainability-related regulatory requirements and investor-driven ESG initiatives.
External Representation & Industry Leadership- Serve as a thought leader for Cencora on sustainability issues, representing the company at industry forums and conferences.
- Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including industry partners, regulators, and advocacy groups, to advance sustainability results.
Team Leadership & Development- Drive professional development within the team to build internal capabilities and innovative approaches to sustainability commitments.
- Oversee resource allocation and management of key sustainability projects, ensuring timely and impactful delivery.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement- Enhance existing or implement new tech solutions to capture, manage and report environmental data.
- Continuously seek opportunities to enhance sustainability efforts, introducing innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
- Develop strategies for resource efficiency, reducing energy consumption, packaging, and waste without impacting operations.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication- Build partnerships across the enterprise to align sustainability goals with shared business objectives, involving operations, HR, PR, government affairs, investor relations, and more.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders to build partnerships and facilitate exceptional sustainability outcomes.
- Educate senior management and stakeholders on sustainability issues, advocating for strategic initiatives and resource allocation.
Additional Responsibilities- Monitor sustainability regulations and communicate changes to ensure compliance.
- Supervise and develop direct reports, maximizing team performance and career development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:- Preferred training in Sustainability, Corporate Responsibility or related field through a four (4) -year bachelor's degree program, advanced degree a plus;
- Requires a minimum of seven (7) ore more years of related experience.
- Experience in CDP reporting preferred.
- Additional experience with GRI and GHG reporting protocols also preferred.
MINIMUM SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: - Strong understanding of Sustainability best practice and trends; strong working knowledge of CDP, DJSI, TCFD and other ESG rankings/ratings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent presentation skills; especially to present complex, technical topics to a non-technical audience at all levels.
- Strong analytical skills and problem-solving ability.
- Strong ability to work across teams and functions.
- Ability to facilitate a positive work environment.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
