Description of Work*** This is a readvertisement. All previous applicants MUST reapply to be considered. ***The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to all 100 counties in North Carolina.
The NCFS manages DuPont State Recreational Forest (DSRF) and Holmes Educational State Forest (HESF) in Transylvania and Henderson Counties. DSRF is managed for natural resource conservation, scenic enjoyment, and outdoor recreational purposes. DSRF strives to provide an exemplary model of scientifically sound, ecologically based natural resource management for the ecological, social, and economic benefit of a diverse community of users. HESF provides the citizens of North Carolina a living outdoor classroom where visitors of all ages can learn about the local natural forest environment.
The DSRF Management Forester will implement the DSRF Land and Resource Management Plan and provide technical resource management assistance to HESF. Duties include, but are not limited to, the supervision and quality control of management activities such as: forest inventory and planning; developing and executing sound silvicultural recommendations; timber sale and harvest administration; implementing best management practices; forest health and pest control treatments; wildlife habitat improvement; regeneration and tending practices; prescribed burning; land measurement and mapping; firewood cutting permits; demonstrations for public and professional education; and research. Additional duties include: public information and education; monitoring visitor safety; fire suppression; disaster response; contract administration; completing reports; and other duties as assigned by the Assistant Forest Supervisor. Position will be expected to wear an NCFS uniform and as a sworn Forest Ranger, enforce State Forest rules. Occasional weekend Duty Ranger work is required.
As an Emergency Response Division, this position will require responding to incidents on DSRF and HESF during and after normal hours of operation, which may require extended hours and/or emergency callback. This position may require responding to wildland fires and other "all risk" incidents as needed locally and throughout the State. Individual will be required to participate on NC Incident Management Teams as assigned. Individual may serve as DSRF-HESF Operations Officer on an as-needed basis that may require occasional night and weekend duty as well as being on-call for emergency response. Occasional heavy lifting required. Environmental exposures are adverse weather conditions, emergency work after sunset, overhead forest hazards, uneven and/or steep terrain, hazardous logging debris, forest pests, intense heat, dust, and smoke, hunters, and large crowds of visitors.
NCFS is an emergency response agency - work schedule may require extended hours, emergency callback, and/or overnight travel. Work hours are typically 8-5 M-F. Extended times of readiness will involve evening, holiday, and/or weekend work. Must be available after working hours during high fire danger periods and times of emergency response. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesThe Knowledge, Skills and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. - Knowledge of silvics and experience applying various silvicultural systems.
- Knowledge of Forest Practice Guidelines and Best Management Practices, and experience in their application in forest management, timber harvesting, and forest road and recreational trail maintenance.
- Knowledge of prescribed burning, and wildland fire prevention and suppression methods.
- Ability to operate basic forestry tools including, but not limited to: Prism, diameter tape, clinometer, increment borer, and compass.
- Ability to collect, synthesize, and present technical information effectively in oral and written form.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with loggers, contractors, cooperators, partners, and coworkers.
- Ability to work with people and supervise work of staff from diverse backgrounds or with diverse perspectives.
- Ability to work independently or as a team player

- Must possess or be able to obtain valid driver's license within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to obtain NC Pesticide Applicator's License w/ Forestry endorsement within 1 year of employment.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES: - Knowledge of silviculture of southern Appalachian Forest types, and principles of restorative forestry.
- Strong background in multiple use resource management.
- Working knowledge of GPS systems and GIS applications, including ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and Field Maps.
- Experience laying out timber harvests, administering timber sale contracts and harvests, and familiarity with associated heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of invasive species; and experience preparing Herbicide Application Plans and using herbicides in a forest setting.
- Minimum Wildfire Qualification - Single Resource Boss Trainee.
- One year of supervisory experience.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsYou may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.Bachelor s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and two years of related professional Forestry experience.
