Position Summary The Seasonal Gardener focuses on all areas of horticulture and gardening; responsibilities include working with a crew on installation, care, and maintenance of flowers and other plant materials at various sites throughout the city.
This position will work approximately April through October. General working hours will be 7:00am to 3:00pm Monday - Friday with occasional weekend hours. Work schedule may vary depending on the weather and time of year.
Position open until filled. First review of applications will be on Wednesday, March 12th.
Essential DutiesEssential Duties and Responsibilities- Installation, maintenance, and removal of annuals, perennials, plants, shrubs and trees at various garden sites and planter locations.
- Ensure that all plants at these sites are adequately weeded, watered, pruned, and fertilized to remain healthy and attractive throughout the growing season.
- Demonstrate courtesy and tact when dealing with the public and other staff.
- Work independently and take initiative in solving issues.
- Communicate effectively via verbal and written reports and forms.
- Other duties as needed or assigned.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to perform manual tasks for extended periods of time.
- Knowledge of plant varieties, their growth characteristics, and maintenance requirements.
- Willingness to work weekends as required.
Desired Qualifications- Experience in a horticulture-related field.
- Associates degree in horticulture or related degree.
- Pesticide applicator license.
- Valid Minnesota Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities- Some knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in general maintenance.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to operate a variety of motorized vehicles and equipment in a safe manner.
- Physical strength sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
