ABOUT THIS POSITION:
Under general direction, supervises the collection and disposal of sewage, recommends and designs sanitation facilities, supervises sanitation construction projects, and coordinates with regulatory agencies responsible for control and enforcement of sewage regulations; coordinates recycling and waste reduction programs throughout the Park District; and performs related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions - Supervises sanitation crew;
- Develops and administers work schedules and standards, staff training, performance evaluations, safety meetings and inspections;
- Provides leadership, motivation, support and encouragement to staff;
- Coordinates and directs the work of other park staff and contractors;
- Conducts the Park District's solid waste program;
- Designs plans and writes technical specifications for a variety of sanitation and waste reduction projects;
- Develops, administers and manages contracts;
- Obtains permits, collects data and prepares reports for appropriate regulatory agencies;
- Monitors budget and determines budget priorities;
- Purchases materials, equipment and supplies;
- Maintains records, logs, inventories, work requests, and writes reports and other correspondence as required;
- Consults with park supervisors and other staff and generally provides expertise and recommendations for sanitation and waste reduction projects throughout the Park District.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:- Coordinates the use of portable sanitation facilities;
- Serves as sanitation truck driver in the event of absences or emergencies;
- Stays abreast of sanitation technology to meet current and future District needs;
- Manages emergency situations such as sewage spills, overflows, etc. as necessary
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsEducation: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a discipline related to prospective duties,
AND
Experience: Four (4) years of appropriate experience in sanitation maintenance, including experience as a lead worker or supervisor.
ORLicense or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License, including the tanker and air brake endorsement is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.
Additional Information Knowledge of: - Knowledge of the sanitation industry including construction principles, codes and regulations affecting sanitation facilities, septic systems, and sewage collection and disposal techniques and related equipment;
- Principles and practices of effective supervision;
- Sewer collection maintenance and inspection techniques the operation and maintenance of advanced septic systems;
- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Ability to:- Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers and park users.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT- Must pass a Level 1 background check.
- Must wear a Park District Uniform.
- Employees in this classification will be required to be able to use respirators in accordance with Cal OSHA regulations.
- May be required to work unusual hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- May be required to be on-call on a scheduled basis and available for emergency response.
