Job Description:The Calvert County Government's Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division is seeking a Recycling Program Specialist. In this role, you will develop promotional outreach campaigns to emphasize the importance of recycling and encourage various groups, departments, businesses, and internal and external stakeholders within the county to recycle and educate the residents on accepted recycling materials. This position requires the ability to speak publicly in front of schools, communities, and various stakeholder groups. This position requires the ability to develop and maintain educational recycling campaigns and promotional activities.In addition to developing and maintaining the recycling outreach educational/promotional programs, the Recycling Program Specialist assist the Recycling Coordinator in preparing for program & project developments as well as assisting in the monthly recycling events held at our various solid waste centers around Calvert County.Position develops and implements outreach/education programs and campaigns, marketing communications and public information tools to promote recycling, waste reduction and waste prevention. Develops and implements training programs for Solid Waste personnel.
Essential Job FunctionsDesigns, modifies, and implements effective outreach programs that promote, education, and encourages the benefits of recycling and waste reduction programs.
Develops promotional tools using a variety of media, newspapers, fliers, signs and banners, newsletters, post cards and broadcast platforms.
Orders and maintains inventory of outreach tools.
Works with Maryland Department of Environment on grants and promotions for recycling and waste reduction programs.
Assists the Recycling Coordinator and staff in compiling recycling tonnage reports.
Develops action plans for school functions, civic events, County fair and similar events throughout the County. Coordinates special events such as Clean Your Files Day, Shred Events, and others as requested. Plans and coordinates educational tours.
Prepares and maintains various databases, reports, and binders to determine the effectiveness of such outreach programs.
Conducts site visits to businesses and County offices to determine recycling potential and develops strategies for improvement.
Makes presentations to schools, businesses and community associations promoting benefits of recycling programs.
Works with the County's Green Team.
Answers citizen inquiries and responds to complaints.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)Training and/or Education:Bachelor's degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Communications, or related field.
Experience:Two years recycling outreach experience.
Licenses or Certificates:Valid driver's license.
Special Requirements:Operation of County owned vehicle.
Background investigation required.
Physical Demands:Requires some physical effort to perform manual work involving frequent periods of standing, frequent walking indoors and outdoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
Unusual Demands:Subject to frequent interruptions and inflexible deadlines.
May be required to work evenings and weekends.

Compensation Steps:Position closing date: January 29, 2025
Pay rate: $29.50 - $31.60 per hour, $53,690 - $57,512 annually
Grade 721, Merit full-time position, 35 hours per week
