Job DescriptionThe University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Mechanical System Engineer, Energy Manager or Senior Mechanical System Engineer, Energy Manager in the Facilities Services Department.
The Mechanical System Engineer, Energy Manager will be responsible for managing and optimizing campus mechanical systems, including chilled water, low temperature heating water, high temperature heating water, steam, and fume hood exhaust systems. Key duties include conducting advanced modeling and simulation for troubleshooting and optimization, establishing and maintaining system electronic records, and implementing condition monitoring technologies. The role involves close collaboration with maintenance teams, participation in design reviews, and providing engineering expertise to ensure the effective operation of critical systems. Additionally, the position contributes to energy management initiatives and strategic planning efforts.
In addition to the Mechanical System Engineer, Energy Manager responsibilities, the Senior Mechanical System Engineer, Energy Manager role is responsible for establishing modeling and simulation methods and condition monitoring approaches tailored to mechanical system objectives, providing operational management in the absence of the Director of Utilities Services, overseeing mechanical system strategic planning, and leading energy management initiatives.
This position reports to the Senior Director of Facilities Maintenance Services.
Mechanical System Engineer
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Establish and maintain a repository of electronic records for campus mechanical systems including the distributed systems known as CHW, LTW, HTHW, steam, and fume hoods.
- Maintain appropriate modeling and simulation for existing and future mechanical systems. Models should be suitable for assisting with troubleshooting, optimization, expansion, and prioritizing upgrade activities.
- Establish appropriate instrumentation to collect validation data for system models and aid with operational optimization.
- Assist maintenance staff with instrumentation and condition monitoring deployment, definition of alarm conditions, and set reporting requirements.
- Conduct modeling and simulation studies as necessary to support system troubleshooting, system modifications/expansions, and new system designs.
- Participate in the Planning and Construction design review process, job walks, and punch list generation as appropriate.
- Provide engineering knowledge and judgement.
- Participate in department energy management activities in collaboration with Building Automation, Electrical Engineer, Sustainability Manager, and accounting staff.
- Provide input to the mechanical, plumbing, and departmental strategic plans.
- Contribute to the goal development process.
- Work with the management team to implement goals.
- Manage and implement special projects as assigned.
Senior Mechanical System Engineer
In addition to the above, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Establish appropriate condition monitoring technologies and methodologies for critical campus systems.
- Provide advanced engineering knowledge and judgement.
- Evaluate and set modeling and simulation, validation data requirement, and condition monitoring methodologies.
- Oversee the mechanical strategic plan.
- Develop, coordinate, and participate in department energy management activities in collaboration with Building Automation, Electrical Engineer, Sustainability Manager, and accounting staff.
- In the event of an absence or vacancy on the management team, assume responsibility for the functional area, as needed.

Bachelor's Degree and four (4) years of related professional work experience;
ORMaster's degree and two (2) years of related professional work experience
Related Experience: BS Degree in mechanical engineering or related field from a regionally accredited institution. Progressively responsible experience in design, analysis, troubleshooting, and/or operation of rotating machinery-based systems.
A valid Class "C" driver's license or higher operator's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. OSHA 30-hour card within one year of employment.
Senior Mechanical System Engineer
Bachelor's Degree and five (5) years of related professional work experience;
ORMaster's degree and three (3) years of related professional work experience
Related Experience: BS Degree in mechanical engineering or related field from a regionally accredited institution. Progressively responsible experience in design, analysis, troubleshooting, and/or operation of rotating machinery-based systems.
A valid Class "C" driver's license or higher operator's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. OSHA 30-hour card within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications- Master's Degree in mechanical engineering
- Professional Engineer certification
- Experience with district heating and cooling systems
Physical DemandsThis position requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling; exerting 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Schedule and Travel The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position may be able to elect an alternative work schedule. Occasional travel may be required.
This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
