Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
The ULA oversees the design review of all capital and renovation projects for suitability in addressing landscape impacts, including tree conservation, site protection and restoration. In addition, the ULA will support landscape planning and projects across the USC system, including seven satellite campuses across the state.
Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials
Professional Registered Landscape Architect ( RLA )
Preferred Qualifications
Masters in Landscape Architecture Degree ( MLA ). AICP and/or LEED certifications and 10 years work experience.
AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Project and Microsoft Office software systems. Arc GIS , Sketch-up, and Bluebeam preferred but not required. Prior experience working with facilities management staff is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture, planning, and general knowledge of site engineering principles. Ability to prepare graphic presentations. Skilled at producing, supervising, and reviewing landscape plans. Knowledgeable in reviewing civil and architectural plans. Ability to estimate cost for a broad range of site work projects. On-site construction management skills. Ability to establish positive working relationships with clients, superiors, subordinates, associates, A/E teams, contractors, state, local and federal professional personnel and other public and private sector organizations and individuals. Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse university staff. Ability to problem-solve and utilize conscious decision-making. Ability to build teams and involve stakeholders.
Job Duties
Job Duty
- Provides design assistance and stewardship for environmental projects working with USC Project Managers, USC Facilities Staff, external A/E teams, and directly with University clients as required to ensure projects are appropriately scoped for landscape impacts, and that all standards and specifications are followed during construction to ensure appropriate stewardship for the campus.
- Design assistance will include (but not be limited to) developing feasibility concepts, providing preliminary opinions of probable cost, and preparing or supervising the production of construction documents.
- Limited project management tasks will be expected including guiding projects through internal approvals, permitting, purchasing and construction administration.

- Work closely with the University Architect/ AVP for Planning, Design & Construction in support of a variety of efforts, including master plans, bike/pedestrian and general accessibility improvements, signage studies, historic preservation initiatives, and other urban-planning tasks as directed.
- Represent the University's interests with governmental and neighborhood entities with current and future impacts to the campus exterior environment, including the City of Columbia and the Department of Transportation.

- Collaborate with Facilities Services' Grounds Maintenance Services including horticultural, hardscape, and arborist staff to provide support and design oversight including tree conservation, site protection and restoration.

- Develop and maintain a list of prioritized landscape and hardscape projects, to include scope and funding criteria, to be prepared when funding becomes available to implement projects.
- Work with the Development Office to align potential projects with donor initiatives and opportunities.
